Tim Stamps has been building surfboards since the age of 15, and is known for the progressive and innovative boards he creates for some of the most accomplished pro surfers out there, novices just figuring out what boards work best under their feet, and everyone in between. It was his surroundings and upbringing that fostered his lifelong passion of surfboard building, and as a kid it didn’t take long to realize he had the shaping bug in his DNA. His desire to help, learn, create, build and dissect surfing into physics, geometrics, hydrodynamics and displacement theory began with two mentors. The first was his father, Johnny Stamps, who built and raced fast, well-designed watercrafts. From handing over a wrench to journeying to the factory to build the boat hulls, the younger Stamps took it all in. The smell of resin and dust became familiar, and still to this day brings back nostalgic days of his childhood.

After the Stamps family moved to the quaint beach town of Seal Beach, it wasn’t a surprise that the young skate rat who built his own ramps would find himself in the back of the Harbour Surfboard shop on Main Street, where he met his second mentor Rich Harbour. Stamps naturally took to the waves, and his talent on the board landed him a spot on the Harbour Surfboards surf team at age 12. After school and his surf sessions, he’d spend afternoons sweeping floors at the shop and asking how to fix dings on his own board. Soon, friends and customers started asking him to patch up their surfboards, and by age 15 in 1984 his life would be forever changed: He got his hands dirty on blanks; helping to mold, shape and glass the boards. By age 20, he started shaping boards on his own.

By 1997, he opened up his own shaping business. Stamps mixes art and science. When not in the shaping room, you may see him paddling out at Surfside or other North OC spots. He hasn’t fully given up the competitive surf scene. He has proudly claimed the most wins ever for the wacky and laid-back Surfside Seventies contest held each year, taking home five top-place trophies since it started in 2008. Stamps Surfboards specializes in any type of board you might need: Shortboards, Longboards, and everything in between. He has a quirky style, which you may see come out in his creations – like the infamous WTF board.
