Californian’s Al Merrick had modest beginnings within his Santa Barbara shop. His focus was simply to produce the best possible surfboards around. He knew riders demand performance and quality in the
harshest of break conditions, Merrick’s goal was to meet these requirements by using imagination and originality. After earning his stripes by meeting the demands of word class riders Channel Islands Surfboards became a reality.
Al Merrick was right, focusing on detail and originality has made him Santa Barbara’s most recognized surfing icon.
Merrick’s boards have lead surfing heros to victory. In his early days Tom Curren powered
through competitions on Merricks intricately shaped work. He earned himself and Channel Islands a name in history. More recently Kelly Slater has used Channel Island Surfboards to destroy his competition and dominate
the surf industry. Only through years of dedication could Al Merrick produce such phenomenal boards.
Merrick has climbed the ranks and been bestowed the titles of “25 Most Powerful People in Surfing” -
Surfer Magazine, and “10 Best Shapers of All Time” - Surfing Magazine 2002. In 2007 Merrick was inducted into Huntingon’s Beach Surfer Hall of Fame. Merrick and his surfboards have solidified their roots in Surfing History.
